THE FESTIVAL
WORD FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to the 18th Auckland Writers Festival.
Auckland is proud to see its annual literary festival go from strength to strength, increasing in attendance and success every year.
This festival has become part of the social and cultural fabric of our city, bringing together leading international writers and our own homegrown talent to share ideas, conversation and discussion with a growing audience of Aucklanders and visitors.
The calibre of international writers travelling to the festival from around the world speaks volumes to the appeal of both the festival and Auckland as New Zealand’s global city.
The event also showcases New Zealand’s own literary luminaries with a
roll-call of our city and country’s best authors, poets, journalists, script- writers, broadcasters, historians, social commentators and more.
Thisfestivalcontributestoouraspirations as a city to be world class and helps entrench our reputation for being so.
Enjoy the festival!
Phil Goff, Mayor of Auckland
SPONSORSHIP
Enga¯ mana, enga¯ reo, naumai, haere mai ki te Hui Taurima Kaituhi o Ta¯ maki Makaurau.
We are delighted to bring you the 2018 Auckland Writers Festival. This is New Zealand’s largest annual festival of ideas and literature, showcasing talented local and international writers, attracting audiences from across the country,
and bringing a cultural vibrancy to our city of Auckland.
We are continuing with a key strategic initiative of investing in youth education and school literacy programmes – particularly for low decile Auckland schools. Over 6,000 students will attend the Schools Programme at the beginning of the Festival week. This will be followed by a diverse and exciting three-day main programme that we hope will inform, entertain and challenge you. We also continue to provide one third of our sessions as free events.
I'm privileged to work with a talented group of trustees on the Festival Board. We are a not-for-pro t charitable trust and as such the trustees bring skill and dedication to the governance of the Festival, on a voluntary basis. My deep appreciation also goes to our small,
but wonderful staff, led so capably by Festival Director, Anne O'Brien. The core team expands to over 100 volunteers for the Festival week – we are very grateful to them all.
Finally, on behalf of the Board, I would like to express gratitude to the writers appearing at the Festival, and to our loyalsponsors, funders, supportersand audience.
Thank you and enjoy!
Ko te tu¯ manako ka harikoa koutou katoa i te hui taurima nei.
