In the ftieth year of New Zealand book awards, we are delighted to celebrate the
16 nalists in the 2018 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
In 1968 it was the vision of the book awards’ founders that the vigour, courage, determination and skill of New Zealand writers and publishers should be celebrated. Fifty years on, that commitment has not diminished.
The New Zealand Book Awards Trust is grateful to the organisations who share our belief in the value of literature to Aotearoa New Zealand. Creative New Zealand remains our stalwart cornerstone funder, and we treasure our relationships with Ockham Residential (our naming-rights sponsor), the Royal Society Te Apārangi and Book Tokens Ltd. The Acorn Foundation generously endows our ction award in perpetuity, and we are fortunate to partner with the Auckland Writers Festival in showcasing the awards ceremony as the rst public event of the festival.
We also owe a great debt of gratitude to this year’s judges: convenors Matariki Williams, Robert Sullivan, Jenna Todd and Ella Henry, and their fellow judges Barbara Brookes, Kim Paton, Michael Harlow, Alison Wong, Philip Matthews, Anna Smaill, Philip King
and Toby Manhire. Their comments about each book appear in this booklet.
We’re thrilled for all the authors whose work has been recognised and honoured and we invite you to read them.
To hear the nalists reading from their books, please join us at the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards ceremony at the ASB Theatre in Auckland on Tuesday 15 May.
