SCHOOLS PROGRAMME TUESDAY MAY 15, WEDNESDAY MAY 16 &
THURSDAY MAY 17 9.45-2.45PM, AOTEA CENTRE
Three days of sessions for 9 to 18-year- old students start the Festival with a  ourish, with four writers circulating on any given day: upper primary offerings on Tuesday May 15 or Wednesday May 16; intermediate on Tuesday May 15; and secondary on either Wednesday May 16 or Thursday May 17. Workshops, as well as a theatrical celebration of Ma-ori writer Rowley Habib, are also on offer.
Transport subsidies are available, and all students receive a free collection of NZ writing. This year the Festival is sponsoring three further schools to attend at no cost and take part in
a follow-up tutoring programme, alongside six schools already on the programme, supported by Vector – a new Festival Silver Partner.
The line-up of accomplished
writers includes: Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock and A.S. King (US); Chris Riddell and Alex Wheatle (UK); and New Zealanders Leonie Agnew, Lawrence Arabia, Sasha Borissenko, Gavin Bishop, Stacy Gregg, Joanna Grochowicz,
Ha-pai Productions, Selina Tusitala Marsh, J L Pawley, David Riley, Victor Rodger, Te Kahu Rolleston, James Russell, Anne Salmond, and Rewa Worley.

Now internationally recognised as one of the best literature celebrations in the world, the Auckland Writers Festival presents a rich and rewarding collection of stories, ideas and provocations designed to invigorate the city and the audience. Writers will arrive from around the world and across the country to deliver
a vibrant and substantial range of engagements, free and ticketed,
with something for everyone. Conversation, music, reading, performance,  lm, debate and
delight – all is on offer in the heart
of Auckland this May.
FAMILY DAY PROGRAMME SUNDAY MAY 20
Fuel your imagination with a day of family-friendly book and story adventures. The Concert Chamber and Balcony Bar in the Town Hall come alive with performances, presentations, animals and insects, story time and activities.
This year’s line-up includes the fabulous The Black Friars Theatre Collective with a lively Pasi ka
fairy tale, animated Margaret Mahy characters on  lm, fun sessions with writers and illustrators including
Pat Chapman, Lorin Clarke, Giselle Clarkson, Angela Keoghan, Courtney Sina Meredith, James Russell, Chris Lam Sam,
Chris Szekely, Bronwen Wall and Kennedy Warne, and creative capers in the foyer.
Sessions are free so just come along on the day and be part of the fun. For full programme see page 41.

In addition, to get Family Day started, we present a special ticketed event
for our younger audience in the ASB Theatre at 9am at the Aotea Centre when Australian comedian, regular Rove guest and The Project presenter, Peter Helliar delivers an hour of hijinks with his Frankie Fish book series. Come ready for action. This event is free for 12s and under; student and adult prices apply. Tickets available from Ticketmaster.

VISIT THE ISLAND
TUESDAY 15 – SUNDAY 20 MAY AOTEA SQUARE, AUCKLAND
Dragon Brothers Island, with its putrid plains, constant cloud and dreamy meadow, comes to Aotea Square for our younger readers. Download the free AR Reads app,  nd the large, intriguing island map on the ground by the steps up to the Aotea Centre, and watch as brothers Flynn and Paddy, their pet dragon Elton, and dastardly dangerous dragon Big Red, come alive amongst witches, smoke,  re and forests.
Fun for all the family in this augmented reality treat, in partnership with Dragon Brothers author James Russell.
