A VERY NZ GARDEN: SUZANNE TURLEY

A foremost landscape designer and the author of Private Gardens of Aotearoa, Suzanne Turley has created gardens in spots the length of NZ – from beach houses in coastal North Island, to spreads within coo-ee of the Southern Alps, and at Huka Lodge and cramped nooks in the cities between. Her work is distinguished by dynamic layers and textures, and she refers to the “choreography” of the garden. In conversation with Mary Lambie, Turley discusses the glories and idiosyncrasies of NZ flora and gardens, achieving balance and form in green spaces, and ways in which garden design can make surrounding architecture sing or tank.
