Chessie Henry has written We Can Make a Life: A Memoir of Family, Earthquakes and Courage. It’s an impressive debut, shortlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards, in which she circumnavigates her father, his work as a rural GP and his involvement in the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes of 2011 and 2016.Henry, the eldest of five children, was born to adventurous parents and she captures with candour and tenderness the ways in which her family grapple with both the joys and defeats of lives lived, and in so doing presents universal truths. She is in conversation with Nic Low.
