Event 26

The 12th-century scholar and nun Heloise d’Argeneuil and the philosopher and monk Pierre Abelard are – thanks to their letterwriting prowess – one of history’s most celebrated couples. Mandy Hager used her 2014 Menton Fellowship to write the novel Heloise, imagining what happens when the enthusiastic lovers encounter religious reform and zealotry. She presents a talk on her singular protagonist – who declared love preferable to wedlock – and the challenges of fictionalising her story.
