Event 84

The music of Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, performed by Auckland singing legend Linn Lorkin with Hershal Herscher (keyboard) and Peter Scott (bass), sets the backdrop for an hour of story from Dean Parker showcasing the playwright ’s novel, Johnson, the sequel to John Mulgan’s 1939 novel Man Alone. Parker has the titular Johnson fighting against Franco’s fascists in the Spanish Civil War and then Hitler in Greece, before returning to NZ in time for another bloody battle – the 1951 waterfront lockout.
