“You don’t so much read Steve Sem-Sandberg as stand in the fiery wind of his prose,” notes The Guardian. The journalist, translator and author has written two extraordinary meditations on human disgrace: the winner of Sweden’s August prize, The Emperor of Lies, which animates the story of the real-life Jewish administrator of the Lodz ghetto in Poland; and the novel The Chosen Ones, which is set in the Viennese Am Spiegelgrund clinic, where ill and disabled children were euthanized. Sem-Sandberg joins Frances Walsh in an exploration of the Nazi legacy through the lens of fiction.
