The polemic Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire is the work of polymath Akala. In it he documents his personal experience of racism, and argues that the British empire has consigned generations of non-white citizens to poverty. Of Caribbean and Scottish descent, and raised in North London, Akala is a BAFTA and MOBO-award- winning rapper. He also founded the Hip-hop Shakespeare Company and is currently writing a YA novel based on Shakespeare’s Dark Lady sonnets (127-154). He speaks with New Zealand Poet Laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh.
