RESURRECTING STORIES

Writers Margot Schwass, Philippa Swan and Ian Wedde discuss their new books, all of which centre on singular women long gone. In the biography All The Juicy Pastures, Schwass takes as her subject Greville Texidor, who came to NZ as a refugee having been an artist's model, music-hall dancer, and anarchist in the Spanish Civil War; Swan’s time-travelling novel The Night of All Souls blends a contemporary tale with the secrets of the 1921 Pulitzer-prizewinner Edith Wharton; and Wedde mines his family history and delivers a sweeping historical saga from Germany to NZ, tracking the character Josephina, in new novel The Reed Warbler. In conversation with Hannah August, the trio talk about excavating past narratives to make them anew.
