Californian Brit Bennett rose to fame with an essay on racism in Jezebel and in 2016 published the novel The Mothers which garnered wide acclaim. New Zealander Ashleigh Young’s second book is the highly rated 2017 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards shortlisted essay collection Can You Tolerate This? which has also garnered her a prestigious international Windham-Campbell Prize for Nonfiction. Both women navigate uncertain times with clarity, and capture emotional fluctuations with grace and skill. They speak with Jennifer Levasseur.
