When should speech and expression be curtailed, if ever? The issue is the subject of heated global and national debate, as hate-speech and cancel culture simultaneously proliferate and are variously defended. To untangle the conflicting and complex positions and issues join Julia Ebner who works for the London-based counter-extremism think tank, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, and Deborah Eisenberg who took on American PEN for giving a Freedom of Expression Courage Award to Charlie Hebdo – for valorising the French satirical magazine’s “anti-Islamic, anti-Maghreb, anti-Arab sentiments”.
