THE EXAMINED LIFE: SARAH GAITANOS
Sarah Gaitanos’ Shirley Smith: An Examined Life is a biography of a remarkable 20th-century New Zealander. Born in Wellington, Smith studied classics at the University ofOxford, qualified as a lawyer at 40, and married the civil servant Bill Sutch, who was tried and acquitted on charges of espionage. Her life was spent championing social justice, legal reform and gender equality. Her connections to her community ran deep – the Mongrel Mob being among those with whom she forged relationships. Gaitanos presents a talk on a woman of complexity and principle.
