THE LIBRARY

Three heavily invested NZ authors debate the state of our libraries. Our book culture is being dismantled, Lloyd Jones (winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for his novel Mr Pip) wrote in a recent article in The Spinoff. Libraries have sewing rooms and video games, but where oh where are the books? Alie Benge (joint-winner of 2017 Landfall essay competition) takes the view that libraries are now more accessible, less elite. And in her latest Ockham NZ Book Awards longlisted and internationally published novel The Absolute Book, winner of the 2019 Prime Minister’s Award for Fiction Elizabeth Knox features a protagonist who writes a book about the threats to libraries – insects, damp, and general carelessness included. A lively discussion is promised, chaired by Janet McAllister.
