Psychiatric nurse turned creative writer and teacher Nathan Filer’s The Heartland: Finding and Losing Schizophrenia (also published as This Book Will Change Your Mind About Mental Health) was a Sunday Times Book of the Year and has been lauded for reconfiguring our understanding of mental illness. With compassion, Filer alternates intimate case histories with chapters in which he considers clinical and theoretical debates, seeks expert comment, and explores ideas including that social media has replaced religion as a frequent source of paranoid delusion. Filer is also the author of the 2013 Costa Book of the Year The Shock of the Fall – the fictional story of a young man navigating grief and mental illness – and has surveyed representations of mental illness in fiction and journalism in the BBC radio documentary The Mind in the Media. He speaks with Charlotte Graham-McLay.
