VANISHING VOICES: RUSS RYMER
Author, freelance journalist and former Guggenheim Fellow Russ Rymer has won an Overseas Press Club of America Award for his National Geographic investigation of the death of tribal languages “Vanishing Voices”. In this Festival address he calibrates what is lost when language of any kind goes silent. He draws on his experiences with communities including the Aka in India, the Tuvan in Siberia and the Comqaac in Mexico, but also on his observations of the languages of journalism and literature, and the institutions associated with them.
