It’s in the Bones: Katherena Vermette

‘No one messes with Strangers,’ thinks Elsie, one of the central characters in Katherena Vermette’s second novel The Strangers. Set in Manitoba, this intergenerational story follows three Métis women as they struggle against the consequences of their own actions and those imposed upon them. Winner of Canada’s prestigious Atwood Gibson Writers Trust Award, Vermette, a Red River Métis (Michif) writer, also received the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry for her first book North End Love Songs, and the Amazon.ca First Novel Award for The Break. She discusses how inherited trauma has affected the characters in her work with Jenna Todd.
