Katherine Mansfield’s Europe: Redmer Yska

‘Katherine Mansfield’s Europe: Station to Station is part homage, part pursuit: an attempt to pick up and follow her footsteps through the tobacco-stained cafés, brasseries, fish markets, hotel lobbies, cake shops, slimy quaysides, train tracks and public gardens she once frequented.’

Redmer Yska set out on the rail trails of Germany, France and Switzerland between 2017 and 2019, using Mansfield’s letters and diaries as his maps. He finds that she is not forgotten and sheds light on the ‘patient historians, literary sleuths and shameless admirers’ in those countries who continue to shape our understanding of her life and work. In this session he alights on some of her key European haunts, a talk enhanced by gorgeous photographs.
