Event 80

Six By Six By 6:66: Jazz Money, Stellar Pritchard, Ruby Solly, Ariana Tikao, Katherena Vermette, Chelsea Watego

For several Māori iwi, the sacred constellation Matariki is the six sisters – Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā and Ururangi and their mother – but how is ‘six’ reflected in other cultures? Six artists have six minutes 66 seconds (give or take) to pay tribute to a little-known but amazing woman from their culture, today or historically, who blew their minds | who blew things up (in a good way) | who changed lives | who fought and won | who fought and lost but made a difference. Each writer has free rein to depict her wahine toa in whatever way suits their subject and moves the audience in the same way their wahine toa moves them; words, original poetry, comedy, a rap, archival footage, song.

He Ahi Kei Taku Korokoro – My Throat Holds Fire series curated by Michael & Matariki Bennett.

Supported by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori / Māori Language Commission, the High Commission of Canada and the Australia Council of the Arts.

Tanya Talaga was scheduled to appear in this event but is unfortunately unable to travel to Aotearoa. Jazz Money will now be appearing in her place.
