Margaret Mutu

Margaret Mutu is Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Whātua and Scottish. She is the Professor of Māori Studies at the University of Auckland. She specializes in Māori language, He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori rights, Māori resistance to British colonisation, and constitutional transformation. She has published many journal articles and book chapters, and four books. The books include Te Whānau Moana (Reed 2003) about her hapū, Ngāti Kahu: Portrait of a Sovereign Nation (Huia 2017) about her iwi, and The State of Māori Rights (Huia 2026) which is a series of annual reviews of the human rights issues Māori had to deal with. It has recently been revised and updated to cover thirty years from 1994 and 2023. Margaret has three adult children, six mokopuna and is a nan, whaea and cuzzie to hundreds.
