Rebecca Kuang

R. F. Kuang is one of the most dynamic and influential voices in contemporary literature. A #1 New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author, she is known for blending history, culture, and social commentary in her genre-crossing work. Her work has garnered widespread acclaim for its intellectual rigor, emotional resonance, and fearless exploration of power, identity, and language. Kuang first captivated readers with The Poppy War trilogy, a sweeping epic inspired by Chinese history and mythology. The series earned her the Compton Crook Award, the Crawford Award, and the 2020 Astounding Award for Best New Writer. It was also a finalist for the Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, Kitschies, and British Fantasy Awards, establishing her as a formidable new talent in speculative fiction. Her breakout standalone novel, Babel: An Arcane History, became a literary sensation. It debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, was named Blackwell’s Book of the Year for Fiction in 2022, and won the 2022 Nebula Award for Best Novel. With Babel, Kuang redefined the boundaries of fantasy literature, weaving a powerful critique of colonialism, language, and academia into a richly imagined alternate history. She followed this success with Yellowface, a provocative and darkly satirical novel that skewers the publishing industry while exploring themes of authorship, privilege, and cultural appropriation. The book further solidified her reputation as a bold and boundary-pushing storyteller. Kuang’s influence extends far beyond the page. She was named to Time magazine’s prestigious Time 100 Next list in 2023, included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2024, and honored as a “Culture Shifter” by HuffPost in 2024. These accolades reflect her growing impact not only as a novelist but as a thought leader shaping global conversations around storytelling, history, and representation. A Marshall Scholar, Kuang holds an MPhil in Chinese Studies from Cambridge and an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies from Oxford. She is currently pursuing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University, where her research focuses on diaspora, contemporary Sinophone literature, and Asian American literature. With each new work, Kuang continues to challenge conventions and expand the possibilities of fiction. Her ability to infuse complex cultural and historical themes into gripping, emotionally charged narratives has made her a literary powerhouse and a vital voice in modern storytelling.
