Between Dreams: Resistance and Representation in Asian Aotearoa
“Dreaming is an active state,” writes Grace Gassin in Between Dreams. “It is a time when we engage with our past and play with the ingredients of our potential futures.”
It is also an act of bravery – and generative. When protestors took to the streets in Hong Kong, they referred to their demonstrations as “dreaming”, while the Cantonese verb for dreaming is “發夢 (faat3mung6)”, implying that a dream spreads, radiates and proliferates.
Spanning diverse heritages and professions, the contributors to this landmark anthology represent the dreams of many people between Asia and Aotearoa.
Contributors Rebekah Jaung, Tze Ming Mok and Balamohan Shingade join Nathan Joe to examine how Asian–New Zealanders are continually remaking what is means to be Asian in Aotearoa today.
