Breton Dukes: Writing Fact Into Fiction

On a family visit to Bokarina, Queensland, acclaimed fiction writer Breton Dukes (Party Boy, What Sort of Man) found the seed of a short story.

But how do you make the leap from lived experience into exaggeration, invention and actual storytelling?

In this hands-on session, Dukes will take you through his process of writing the short story “Bokarina”, revealing how he navigated the crucial decisions: what to keep, what to discard, what to heighten, and where truth ends and fiction begins.

Participants are encouraged to bring a story idea of their own based on real events and have a go at making some transformations of their own.

Perfect for writers at any stage who want to turn their own experiences into compelling fiction.
