We Can Be on Other Planets: Māori Speculative Fiction

Pick one: A queer, Māori speculative fiction trilogy with magic-wielding pirates, a satirical sci-fi novel that reimagines colonisation with aliens, or a young adult novel that blends sci-fi elements with Māori mythology. Can’t choose? Neither could we.

Māori speculative fiction offers a fresh new perspective on the genre, weaving together indigenous knowledge and imagery with intergalactic worlds and extraterrestrial creatures. Steph Matuku (Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Tama, Te Atiawa), Sascha Stronach (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki) and Ockham NZ Book Awards longlisted Tīhema Baker (Raukawa te Au ki te Tonga, Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa Rangatira) write at the intersection of indigeneity and sci-fi, solidifying Mātauranga Māori in our futures – whether on Earth or elsewhere.

Join these three Māori sci-fi writers as they chat with Cassie Hart (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māhaki ki Makaawhio) about the unique power of Māori speculative fiction."
