Kathryn Van Beek

2023 Robert Burns Fellow and Winston Churchill McNeish Writers’ Fellow Kathryn van Beek is the winner of the Mindfood Short Story Competition and the Headland Prize. Her work has appeared in Overland, Landfall, takahē, The Spinoff, Newsroom, and in her short story collection, Pet. She has also written and illustrated two children’s books. Kathryn studied at Te Herenga Waka’s International Institute of Modern Letters before undertaking a doctorate on the topic of writing for positive change. She was the driving force behind an update to the Holidays Act that provides bereavement leave for miscarriage.
