Meng Foon was born in Tairawhiti/Gisborne to migrant parents from China. He has 24 years of expertise in local government and speaks Cantonese, English, Seyip and te reo Māori. His use of languages and appreciation of different cultures have led to his appointment as the Race Relations Commissioner in 2019.
